There aren’t many papers which are have an abstract so perfect that its already ready for Instagram lol so without further a due I introduce to you quite possibly one of, if not the best summaries regarding weight loss diets and metabolic health that you will probably find on any paper out there. Reference = Thom and Lean, (2017). Is there an optimal diet for weight management and metabolic health?

“Individuals can lose body weight and improve health status on a wide range of energy (calorie) restricted dietary interventions. In this paper, we have reviewed the effectiveness of the most commonly utilized diets, including low-fat, low-carbohydrate, and Mediterranean approaches, in addition to commercial slimming programs, meal replacements, and newly popularized intermittent fasting diets. We also consider the role of artificial sweeteners in weight management

Conclusion = Low-fat diets tend to improve low-density lipoprotein cholesterol the most, while lower-carbohydrate diets may preferentially improve triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. However, differences between diets are marginal. Weight loss improves almost all obesity-related co-morbidities and metabolic markers, regardless of the macronutrient composition of the diet, but individuals do vary in preferences and ability to adhere to different diets. Optimizing adherence is the most important factor for weight loss success, and this is enhanced by regular professional contact and supportive behavioural change programs. Maintaining weight losses in the long term remains the biggest challenge, and is undermined by an "obesogenic" environment and biological adaptations that accompany weight loss”

My interpretation? Find a diet that works for you and that places you in a deficit whether it be low carb, low fat, IF, paleo, it really doesn’t matter as the differences between them are so marginal that they probably aren’t worth noting unless you are suffering from some severe disease (which I assume you aren’t)

All of the information regarding the macro & micronutrient composition of the two potatoes in this post is from a study conducted by King & Slavin (2013) who analysed the role of potatoes on human health (lol what an epic study). Analysis showed:

• Calories = 94kcal vs 90kcal
• Protein = 2g vs 2g
• Fat = 0.15g vs 0.15g
• Carbs = 21g vs 21g
• Fibre = 2g vs 3.3g
• Potassium = 544mg vs 475mg
• Magnesium = 27mg vs 27mg
• Phosphorous = 75mg vs 54mg
• Iron = 64mg vs 69mg
• Vitamin C = 12.6mg vs 19.6mg

Practical implications: Overall there are no real noticeable differences between the two other than the fibre content and Vitamin C being slightly higher in the sweet potato vs white which I guess makes senses considering most foods rich in vitamin C are those brightly coloured i.e. red & yellow (Lykkesfeldt 2014 Chambial et al 2013).

So, let’s have some science. Although i do have a plethora of easy to make, quick recipes on the 🎥 channel☝🏼, studies have still shown that, while stress, limited knowledge of how to cook healthy foods & taste preferences are definitely some of the barriers causing young adults to opt NOT to eat “healthy” nutritious meals (House et al 2006, Andajani-Sutjahjo et al 2004), the most FREQUENTLY reported barrier to healthy eating has shown to be lack of time (Betts et al 1995, Greaney et al 2009, Lappalainen et al 1997).

Depending on the demographic and/or age, this can be because of commitments to work, school, and/or leisure activities leisure schedules (Betts et al 1995) however, overall, “not having time” has thus been shown to be one of, if not the main causes of increased junk & convenience food consumption (takeaway or pre-packaged) (Inglis et al 2005) along with being associated with a lower quality of diet overall with significantly lower fruit & vegetable intake (Welch et al 2009, Larson et al 2009).

While you can argue that you can still just “hit your macros” with junk/convenience foods, most people do NOT track their macros & thus, due to junk/convenience foods often being very energy dense, this could be a risk factor for weight gain and/or obesity. Furthermore, vitamins & minerals are crucial for overall health & prevention of disease (Shenkin 2006) thus, by frequently opting for junk/convenience foods (which are sig. lower in micronutrients) over more nutrient dense food/meals, you may start to impair your HEALTH as well.

I gave AM training another go this morning.

Pre-lockdown I got into the routine of waking at 4.30am, training at 5.30am to be in work before 8 so that I could come straight home after to study for my exams.

Yeah, I don’t know how I did it either 🤦🏼‍♀️

I got out of the habit of AM training when the gyms closed.

Because I was training at home, I’d procrastinate it all day long because I didn’t “need” to train at a particular time.

But I find that I tend to dread my session when it’s hanging over my head all day, even if I enjoy it once I get into the swing of things.

So I’d like to give morning sessions a go again. Attack them fresh, before the stress of the day takes hold.

Once complete I can then throw myself into my work, my business and my studies.

And I guess it will leave me a little more time to relax or something 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sometimes I focus so much on how to better myself, that I forget that rest is an important part of this.

Every day I work hard to progress in my career, my coaching business, my training, my education and knowledge of nutrition, exercise and physiology.

I am guilty of neglecting rest and recovery.

I know logically how important this is for my physical and mental well-being.

I also am aware that this will only facilitate my success.

Yet I still struggle to shut off and give myself time off to relax and recuperate.

I mean, what use am I to my colleagues, my clients, my family and friends if I burn out from overworking?

I have realised how important is it to ensure that I schedule some downtime into my routine.

This will be a primary action point for me for the week ahead.

I preach the importance of rest to my clients, and it is important that I lead by example 🙏🏼

How many stages of eating are there?

You may think there are only two - start and stop, right?
-
Well, a woman named Margaret Fletcher developed this graph describing six phases of eating.
-
It separates eating into the non-eating phase, the preparation phase (where you are deciding what to eat), a pause, an at-the-meal phase, and end of meal phase, and a clean up phase.
-
This is a useful tool to use both for yourself and for your clients, as you can pinpoint specific areas to work on.

Ask yourself the question:
-
“How do I DECIDE to start eating?”
-
This can help you to identify the triggers as to why you are eating.
-
Are you truly hungry? Or bored? Or simply eating because it’s “time” to eat?
-
The preparation phase requires some outer wisdom. You will need to figure out how to decide what to eat and how to make a choice that will set you up for the rest of the day.

This is the phase that many of us neglect. We are so used to eating with distraction, in front of a tv or laptop.
-
Before you start eating, ground yourself and see how your body is feeling. Take 10-20 seconds to focus on connecting to your body before you commencing the meal phase.
